For 2009, I've decided to enter the Race Across America in the solo division. With the help of Jeff Bauer and our Gran Fondo Fixies crew, I feel like I've accomplished every other long distance goal I've set for myself. All that's left is to try "the World's Toughest Bicycle Race" on my own. Who knows if I'm ready yet, or if I'll ever have what it takes to finish this race without the help of a strong teammate. Timing of course is very important, and I feel like there's no better time than now to give it a run.
Solo RAAM will present a true challenge to my biggest weakness, which is riding in extreme heat. Like most people, I struggle on long days when the temperature approaches 100 degrees. Despite this, I think I can get through the desert with a well planned race strategy and a good crew. On the positive side, I feel like my ability to handle sleep deprivation is a true strength, and at this point experience should also be on my side. |
| A few people have asked me whether or not I plan to race 2009 on a fixed gear bike. The answer is that I'm going back to geared riding, as I don't want to jeopardize my chances of finishing. In the event that I'm successful in 2009, and I don't physcially or financially destroy myself, there's always the small chance that I may want to raise the bar on a following year. |
